Meeting the Challenge

Before partnering with Kubota Engine America and their authorized distributor, WATERAX faced a familiar challenge: finding a diesel engine that could withstand the extreme demands of wildland firefighting while meeting modern emissions standards. Operating in remote, high-stress environments requires equipment that performs flawlessly under pressure, balances power-to-weight ratio, and maintains fuel efficiency and reliability, all without compromising durability.

“We needed an engine that offered the right balance of power, efficiency and serviceability,” explains Frederic Lefrancois, vice president of products & supply chain at WATERAX. “Finding a compact, emissions-compliant diesel engine that could operate under high load and variable conditions – without sacrificing performance – was essential.”

Why Kubota Engines

The solution came with the Kubota D902 diesel engine, which now powers WATERAX’s BB-4® and B2X® vehicle-mounted fire pumps. Known for their compact size, proven durability and strong power-to-weight ratio, Kubota engines checked every box.

“We chose Kubota engines because of their reputation for quality, performance and durability,” says Frederic. “They’re compact and efficient – an excellent fit for our fire pump platforms – and Kubota’s service network ensures support is always nearby, no matter where our customers operate.”

Integration Made Easy

Integrating Kubota engines into WATERAX’s products proved seamless. The standardized mounting points and compact design simplified assembly and reduced production time.

“We can bolt our speed increaser directly to the engine, which streamlines manufacturing and helps us maintain high quality while improving efficiency,” Frederic explains.

Another advantage came through design innovation: the fuel pump can connect directly to the engine chassis, eliminating the need for an external fuel tank. This simplification reduced overall weight and improved reliability – key benefits for firefighters.

Performance That Speaks For Itself

The results have been clear. WATERAX pumps powered by Kubota engines deliver consistent, dependable performance in the world’s harshest firefighting conditions. The D902 engine’s rugged construction ensures long service life and minimal maintenance, while its efficiency helps extend operating time in remote areas.

“Our customers benefit from fewer interruptions, lower operating costs and greater confidence in the field,” Lefrancois notes. “Kubota engines complement our pumps perfectly – they’re reliable, efficient, built to last.”

Strengthening Partnerships

WATERAX’s collaboration with their distributor, Marindustriel, has also strengthened operations.

“Marindustriel holds engines locally and provides consistent monthly deliveries, which helps us keep production on track,” says Lefrancois. “Their technical support and proactive communication have been invaluable.”

That partnership, along with Kubota’s responsive OEM support, has proven instrumental.

“Kubota has been open and proactive, especially when navigating challenges like new trade tariffs. Their collaboration helped us minimize supply chain disruptions and continue meeting customer needs.”

Looking Ahead

WATERAX plans to continue building this partnership well into the future. The company’s goal remains clear: to deliver dependable, high-quality firefighting equipment powered by equally dependable engines.

“Overall, our experience with Kubota has been very positive,” Lefrancois says. “Kubota engines deliver reliable, durable performance that perfectly complements our rugged firefighting equipment and supports our mission in the field.”

Together, our partners drive reliability where it matters most – on the front lines. With shared values of performance, innovation and trust, WATERAX, Marindustriel and Kubota Engine America continue to power the equipment that helps protect lives and communities every day.
